In England, during the past twenty years, the number of people classified as obese has almost trebled. Currently over 50% of the adult population is classified as overweight, with 17% of men and 21% of women being classed as clinically obese.

For people between the ages of 55 and 64, these figures increase to 23% of men and 29% of women.

Obesity is known to be a contributing factor in a number of life threatening diseases, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer.
